Secretary of the DENR of the Philippines Visits Weathernews

-Exchanging views on cooperation to combat climate change in the Philippines and resolve the shipping industry issues-

On December 16, 2024 (Mon), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary of the Republic of the Philippines (hereafter referred to as the “Philippines”) Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga visited the Weathernews headquarters. The Philippines experiences many natural disasters, such as typhoons, volcanoes, and forest fires, and adapting to climate change is a must for the country. Like Japan, it is also an island nation where maritime transportation is very important. During her visit, we exchanged a wide range of views on the services we provide to Filipino companies, climate change countermeasures in the Philippines, challenges in shipping, and possibilities for future cooperation.
DENR Secretary Loyzaga stressed the importance of climate risk analysis due to challenges in understanding physical risks such as flooding and sea level rise when companies develop natural resources or build facilities in coastal cities in the Philippines. In addition, from the perspective of forest conservation, she expressed a high level of interest in our explanation of the forest fire risk we are addressing.
Furthermore, Secretary Loyzaga was particularly interested in the “Sea Navigator,” an integrated navigational weather service that helps ship operations considering the environment, safety, and economy. By utilizing this service, shipping operators can select routes with low environmental impact and monitor the CO2 emissions of their ships in real time, enabling them to comply with CO2 emissions regulations set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Weathernews will continue ongoing discussions with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the Philippines to contribute to the fight against climate change.
