Weathernews Inc. (Headquarters: Chiba, Japan; President and Representative Director: Tomohiro Ishibashi) has commenced sales of a routing service equipped with “OceanWise”, a vessel performance model from HD Hyundai Marine Solution (HMS), in its integrated marine weather service “SeaNavigator”.
Weathernews signed an MOU with HMS, a subsidiary of HD Hyundai Group, in January this year. This new service combines HMS's vessel performance models with optimal route selection technology and the weather and marine data that Weathernews has developed over many years, which will be presented on the integrated marine weather service SeaNavigator. This allows for more sophisticated route optimization for shipping companies with high affinity with HMS's vessel performance model. This dramatically improves accuracy and efficiency in operations, with better safety in navigation, reduce fuel consumption, and lower CO₂ emissions.

Using HMS's Vessel Performance Models in the OSR Service

Since its foundation nearly 40 years ago, Weathernews has supported a cumulative total of 1 million voyages, providing support for safe and economical vessel operations through its OSR (Optimum Ship Routing) service. Weathernews currently provides optimal route selection through SeaNavigator. This service shows the optimal route for each voyage, reflecting not only weather factors but also detailed vessel data such as wave resistance experienced by the vessel and propeller thrust force using HMS's vessel performance model OceanWise. This allows for the selection of optimal routes that can reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions while improving voyage safety, achieving maximum operational efficiency.
As of 2024, HMS has implemented its proprietary vessel performance model OceanWise on over 600 vessels worldwide, and in demonstration tests with 8 vessels, it produced real results where fuel consumption was reduced by an average of 5.3% annually. Combining this with Weathernews' weather forecasting and optimal route selection technology is expected to grow these benefits even further.
Weathernews will continue to incorporate the latest technology to create more sophisticated services in an effort to help even more shipping operators achieve safe, optimized voyages.

Comments from the Companies

This service is not merely a combination of features, but the first attempt in the industry to integrate weather data with HMS's vessel performance models into a single platform. We have already received a great deal of interest from major shipping companies worldwide and will continue to provide real cost reductions and value for ESG through optimization for each customer.

This collaboration represents an important turning point that simultaneously addresses the two challenges facing the shipping industry: operational efficiency and sustainability. With increasingly strict international environmental regulations, we will provide practical solutions to shipping companies to help them reduce fuel consumption and emissions at the same time.
