The AI agent supports weather personnel at airlines through a chat-style conversational interface, helping them faster, more accurate operational decisions.
The aviation industry currently faces two compounding challenges: a surge in workload driven by the recovery of travel demand following the COVID-19 pandemic, and a widening experience gap between veteran and junior operations managers and weather personnel. To address these frontline challenges, Weathernews has added a new AI agent to its aviation weather platform, SkyAviators. The AI agent distills the aviation weather expertise and operational know-how Weathernews has built over more than 40 years. It provides rapid, multilingual responses in a chat-style interface to weather risk inquiries that were previously handled through direct communication with Weathernews' expert teams It instantly analyzes and answers questions about weather risk forecasts, including reduced visibility and strong winds, at over 3,500 airports worldwide.
Weathernews has also updated the Strategic Decision Hub, a feature that consolidates weather risks in one place, allowing users to check both current and forecast weather risks across airports at a glance. The AI agent factors in individual airline operational standards and presents detailed expert insights that serve as the basis for operational decisions.
This enables AI to support specialized decisions, such as determining whether to land, selecting the optimal alternate airport, and planning reserve fuel loads. By instantly establishing an objective, sophisticated operational decision-making framework instantly and without reliance on individual experience, Weathernews is helping to improve safety, operational quality, and management efficiency across the aviation industry.

AI Agent Added to SkyAviators

Weathernews has equipped its aviation weather platform, SkyAviators, with an AI agent that instantly delivers conversational answers about weather forecasts and operational risks at over 3,500 airports worldwide. Rather than simply listing weather data, the feature offers concrete recommendations directly tied to the day-to-day work of airline personnel.
Airline weather personnel use this feature to chat with the AI. For example, when deteriorating weather is expected at a destination airport, an airline weather specialist might ask, "What are the weather risks at XX Airport over the next 12 hours?" The AI agent immediately responds with insights from multiple weather models along with specific recommended actions: "During the XX time frame, low ceilings are highly likely to require an instrument approach. We recommend securing an alternate airport and reviewing the fuel load. Rain is expected to leave the runway surface wet, so landing performance should be recalculated with the appropriate braking action in mind.." Using these objective, AI-generated recommendations as a basis for decision-making, personnel can efficiently formulate flight plans that include selecting an alternate airport and calculating reserve fuel.

Weather Risk Visualization and Flexible Customization for Individual Airlines

Weathernews has also updated the Strategic Decision Hub, a feature that consolidates weather risk information into a single view. Previously best suited to monitoring current risks based on real-time airport conditions, the Hub now also offers a consolidated view of weather forecasts and their associated risks. Threshold values for visibility, rain, wind, lightning, snow, and other weather elements that determine whether flights can operate are individually configured by the Weathernews’ customer success team through ongoing dialogue with each airline.
