Communities Living in Harmony with Nature

Living in Harmony with Nature, Nurturing a Richer Life and Resilience to Disasters

Through co-creation with our Supporters, we create communities that enjoy nature and contribute to biodiversity conservation. We also aim to realize a sustainable society that makes the most of nature's diverse functions, achieving both a richer everyday life and disaster resilience for times of need.

Our Approach

We are committed to biodiversity conversation by bringing visibility to ecosystem health in collaboration with our corporate and individual Supporters. We actively engage in industry-led biodiversity initiatives and foster strategic partnerships with external experts to protect and restore our natural world.

Key Initiatives

We support the international community's goal of achieving a Nature Positive world. In alignment with Japan's National Biodiversity Strategy 2023-2030, we focus on two primary pillars: Mapping Ecosystem Status and Driving Action for Biodiversity

Visualizing the State of Biodiversity

In November 2005, we launched Weather Report, a feature enabling individual Supporters to share photos and videos of weather phenomena, nature, and local wildlife. To this day, a vast number of reports regarding the weather and seasonal changes are shared daily. We also lead recurring seasonal projects alongside our Supporters, such as the Sakura Project and the Black Cicada Survey, through which we have monitored shifts in biodiversity and ecosystems for many years.
Through these initiatives, we contribute to "recognizing the value of and taking action for biodiversity (individual behavioral change)"*1. By sustaining these efforts year after year, we also support the goal of "enhancing basic surveys and monitoring for biodiversity assessment"*2.

Initiatives to Achieve the 30by30 Target (Supporting Nature Positive Sites)

We have joined the 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity, an initiative led by the Ministry of the Environment. As one of our primary efforts, we have launched support activities—including biological surveys and the maintenance of Satoyama forests and paddy fields at Doyatsu no Sato. This Nature Positive Site is managed by the NPO Balance 21 and is located in Chiba City, home to our global headquarters.
The 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity works toward the 30by30 Target, a key objective of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted in December 2022. This global target aims to effectively conserve at least 30% of the world’s land and sea as healthy ecosystems by 2030, with the ultimate goal of halting and reversing biodiversity loss to become Nature Positive.
Guided by our Dream to protect the lives of mariners and the future of the Earth and our founding principle, to be of help in times of need, we strive to realize a society where human communities, corporate activities, and the global environment are all sustainable. Through our support for Nature Positive Sites, we are dedicated to conserving natural capital (biodiversity)—the essential foundation of our global environment—and contributing to the achievement of the 30by30 target. Furthermore, we will leverage the insights gained from these field activities to develop nature-related services that support the nature-positive efforts of our corporate clients and app users.

Participation in Industry Groups and Initiatives

Keidanren Committee on Nature Conservation & Keidanren Declaration of Biodiversity Initiative

We are active members of the Keidanren Committee on Nature Conservation. Endorsing the principles of the Keidanren Declaration of Biodiversity, we have participated in the Keidanren Declaration of Biodiversity Initiative since July 2023.

Japan Business Initiative for Biodiversity (JBIB)

Since May 2024, we have been a member of the Japan Business Initiative for Biodiversity (JBIB), a coalition of leading companies dedicated to the active conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity

Since April 2025, we have participated in the 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity, an initiative led by the Ministry of the Environment. This alliance is focused on achieving the 30by30 Target—the global mission to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 (Nature Positive) by effectively conserving at least 30% of land and sea areas as healthy ecosystems.
